Yumenoshima ( Japanese 夢 の 島 , dt. "Island of Dreams") is a Japanese island in the Bay of Tokyo and a district of the Kōtō district . The island was artificially built by dumping rubbish.

history

The island was originally conceived in the 1930s as the location for Tokyo's new airport to replace Tokyo Haneda Airport . This plan was completed in 1938 and work on the island's construction began in 1939 but was then postponed due to resource constraints caused by World War II. After the war, the plan for the airport was canceled because the Allies wanted to expand Haneda rather than build a completely new airport. A public beach opened on the island in 1947, at which time the name Yumenoshima was chosen. In 1950 the beach closed and from 1957 the island was used as a garbage dump.
