Discussion about new building

According to the shareholders, the hall in its current appearance and capacity no longer meets the current requirements. The Saarland state government and the city of Saarbrücken are therefore planning to demolish the Saarlandhalle and build a new multifunctional hall with space for up to 8,500 visitors. A number of alternative locations for the new location were under discussion, one of which has been a mining dump near the Pfeifershofweg in the Rodenhof district since the beginning of 2010 . Another idea resulted in a new building with a direct connection to the Congress Hall in downtown Saarbrücken. So far, however, there has been no financing and operating concept for the new building, which according to an expert opinion would have cost around EUR 40 million in 2008 - and would be correspondingly more expensive today. Other voices in the public discussion are of the opinion that the hall can be modernized and expanded at significantly lower cost. The catchment area of the Saarbrücken location is also not of a size that suggests the cost-neutral operation of the hall.

On January 1st, 2020, Mayor Uwe Conradt saw a need for action, as the Saarlandhalle could only be used until 2030. He envisions a new hall for up to 10,000 visitors.
