Charles Herbert Lowe
Charles Herbert Lowe Jr. (born April 16, 1920 in Los Angeles , † September 13, 2002 ) was an American biologist and herpetologist .
Life
After graduation, he served as a GI in the United States Navy in the Pacific during World War II . In 1946 he enrolled at UCLA University in California . In 1950 he got there the title . D. Ph awarded. He then attended the University of Arizona . There he later became professor of ecology and evolutionary biology .
His main interest was particularly the fauna of the Sonoran Desert . He wrote extensive studies and in 1964 published his study The Vertebrates of Arizona ("The Vertebrates of Arizona"). In total, he published well over 100 scientific articles and books.
In the 1960s, his research established the parthenogenetic reproduction of a number of rail lizard species . He also discovered that the desert toothcarps survived exposed to temperatures of up to 44 ° C and low oxygen concentrations.
Lowe was married and had two children. He died in 2002 after his health deteriorated.
