The Rheingoldhalle in Mainz was built from 1965 to 1968 on Halleplatz on the banks of the Rhine near the Theodor-Heuss-Brücke by the Mainz architect Heinz Laubach . The town hall stood on the site of the Rheingoldhalle until February 1945 .

The inauguration of the Rheingoldhalle took place on November 9, 1968 . Today, the hall, together with the town hall and the Hilton Hotel, forms a modern complex. In 2006/2007 a large-scale renovation and extension was carried out by the Danish architects Dissing + Weitling . The Rheingoldhalle has been looked after by mainzplus Citymarketing GmbH since 2012 and marketed as a conference and event location.

The large hall or congress hall of the Mainz Rheingoldhalle was closed from November 2018 due to renovation work due to fire protection requirements and to renew the event technology, which was planned for one year. On May 16, 2019, the Rheingoldhalle was badly damaged by fire.

The Rheingoldhalle was for a time the venue for the television carnival community meeting Mainz, Mainz remains as it sings and laughs and is often the venue for party conferences, e.g. B. the FDP in November 1978 .

From 2001 to 2010, the world's elite chess players met here for the Chess Classic .

In 2008 there was a large exhibition with works by the American artist James Rizzi , which was attended by 50,000 spectators; In 2009 Otmar Alt exhibited his work.
