No Good Deed ( The House on Turk Street ) is an American - German thriller directed by Bob Rafelson from 2002 . The plot is based on the short story The House on Turk Street by Dashiell Hammett from 1924.

Police investigator Jack Friar is asked by his neighbor to look for her missing 15-year-old daughter on Turk Street. During the investigation, Friar comes across a gang led by gangster Tyrone who is preparing a robbery and is taken hostage. Friar and Tyrone's girlfriend, Erin, become friends. There is a dispute between Tyrone and his accomplice Hoop, which Erin also claims for himself. Erin manipulates the men and deliberately incites the opponents.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times that the subject matter of the film is  similar to that of Bob Rafelson's earlier films -  Five Easy Pieces and When the Postman Rings Twice . The film cannot compete with the best works by Rafelson, but it is “gripping” and offers the atmosphere of film noir .

Bob Rafelson was nominated for a prize at the Moscow International Film Festival in 2002.
