Ganymed was an Austrian band that formed in the 1970s and specialized in futuristic disco music and synth pop .

history

Founded by Gerry Edmond, who began his musical career in 1966 in Austria's youngest band - The Events (Anton Gegen - drums, Heinz Hummer - bass, Leopold Birsak - guitar, Gerry Edmond - guitar / vocals). In 1969 the members of the school band went their separate ways, and Gerry Edmond began his professional music career together with Kurt Hauenstein (Supermax) in Germany. There the two separated after a while, and through various paths to develop his own style, Gerry Edmond returned to Vienna in 1977 to start his own music project. Working as a studio technician, he created his ideas and formed the Ganymed group together with other musicians in Vienna. Ganymede's greatest hit was in 1978 with the song It Takes Me Higher , which was number 5 in the Austrian charts for four weeks . In Germany the title reached number 23 and was represented there for 18 weeks in the music market charts of the Top 100. The album of almost the same name, Takes You Higher , was in Austria in November 1978 at number 16 and was there for 12 weeks. In the same year, the title Saturn in Austria was still at number 19 in the charts, followed two years later by Money Is Addiction (Of This Crazy World) at number 17. A characteristic of the band and their music was the theme of “space”. Futuristic sounds and costumes helped Ganymede to establish itself in the space disco sub-genre . In the 1980s and 1990s some songs were edited by DJs and at the time of the new disco scene, some remixes were made. At some of the last Ganymede concerts in 1981 Falco took part as bassist.
