Julia Migenes (born March 13, 1949 in New York ) is an American opera singer ( soprano ) and actress .

Life

Migenes is of Puerto Rican descent on the mother's side and Greek on her father's side. Migenes also claims to have Irish roots. The name "Migenes" has its origin in the Irish name McGuinness. She started her career with small roles on Broadway in the 1960s in the musicals Carnival! and West Side Story . Her breakthrough came with the role of Tevje's daughter Hodel in Fiddler on the Roof . Their greatest success had as Carmen in the eponymous film version of the opera by Georges Bizet alongside Placido Domingo in the 1980s. It was directed by the Italian director Francesco Rosi . In 1970 Migenes was honored with the Bambi . In addition to her numerous recordings in the field of light music, she also worked with conductors such as Lorin Maazel and Bruno Weil .

Julia Migenes has been married to the Hungarian film director Peter Medak for the third time since 1988 and has two children from previous marriages. She has been an avowed member of Scientology since 1977 .
