geography

The city is located right on the right bank of the Incomáti River , a river that flows from South Africa to Mozambique and flows into the Indian Ocean south of Manhiça.

There are a good 75 kilometers between the capital Maputo and Manhiça. In the place (or in the area of the administrative post of the same name) lived on January 1, 2005 about 60,031 people. The surrounding town of Maciana is also included in Manhiça. This means that the administrative post itself is 412 square kilometers.

The EN1 trunk road , which connects southern and northern Mozambique and is one of the most important transport links in the country, runs through the town . The place is therefore particularly important for travelers passing through.

history

Manhiça was elevated to a small town ( Vila ) on May 18, 1957 during the Portuguese colonial period and thus received (limited) self-government. Manhiça has been a Munizip (roughly urban districts, Portuguese : município ) since 1998 . The creation of a Munizip is primarily associated with the privilege of being able to choose the local government in local elections. Since then, the local population has always voted for the FRELIMO candidates: Laura Daniel Tamele ( 1998 ), Alberto Chicuamba ( 2003 , 2008 ) and Luís Munguambe ( 2013 ).
