Sandra Maria de Brito Pereira (born February 18, 1977 in Alvoco da Serra ) is a Portuguese linguist and politician ( PCP ). Since the 2019 European elections , she has been a member of the European Parliament as part of the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left .

Life

Sandra Perreira studied and obtained her doctorate in linguistics. After graduating, she continued to do research in her field and has since worked at the Center for Linguistics at the University of Lisbon . At the same time she was elected chairman of the Portuguese Association of Science Fellows ( Associação de Bolseiros de Investigação Cientifíca ).

Pereira was politically engaged and committed to the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP). In the spring of 2019, the party nominated her for second - and therefore considered "safe" - place on the list, although she had not previously held any mandate or role in the party. Top of the list, João Ferreira , defended Pereira's election and emphasized her strong civic engagement. The PCP, Miguel Viegas , who came second in the 2014 European elections , did not run again in order to run for the Portuguese parliamentary elections in 2019 .

The communists won 6.8 percent of the vote and thus almost two seats, so that Pereira has been a member of the 9th European Parliament since then. Pereira joined the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left . For the group, she is a member of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs , of which she is Vice-Chair, and of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality . She is a deputy member of the Committee for Industry, Research and Energy .
