André Ventura

André Claro Amaral Ventura , called André Ventura , (born January 15, 1983 in Algueirão-Mem Martins ) is a professor at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa and chairman of the political party Chega! in Portugal and its only member of the Assembleia da República , the Parliament of Portugal.

Life

Ventura has a degree in Law from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa and a PhD in Public Law from the College Cork University in Ireland .

In 2001 he joined the Partido Social Democrata , for which he was elected as the top candidate for the city council of Loures in the north of Lisbon in 2017 . However, he resigned this office, resigned from the PSD and founded Chega on April 9, 2019 .

In the European elections on May 26, 2019 , he was the top candidate of the three-party Basta coalition , consisting of Chega, Partido Popular Monárquico and Partido Cidadania e Democracia Cristã . The 49,496 votes, or 1.49% of the votes, were not enough for a mandate and the special-purpose coalition was dissolved again.

In the parliamentary elections on October 6, 2019 , top candidate Ventura was elected to the Assembleia da República , the parliament of Portugal, in the Lisbon constituency. Thus, for the first time since April 25, 1974, a politician from a right-wing extremist party is a member of the Assembleia.
