Marisa Matias
Marisa Isabel dos Santos Matias , short Marisa Matias (born February 20, 1976 in Coimbra ) is a Portuguese politician of the Bloco de Esquerda . Matias has been a member of the European Parliament since the 2009 European elections as part of the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left . She was re-elected to the European Parliament twice ( 2014 and 2019 ).
Life
Education and academic career
Matias received his doctorate in sociology from the University of Coimbra , where he also completed postgraduate studies and a university degree. Her core areas are environmental medicine, science, health and political sociology. She has published several scientific articles, book chapters and other national and international publications on the relationship between the environment and public health, science and knowledge, as well as democracy and civil society, and has worked as a trainer and teacher on several degree and postgraduate programs.
Matias was initially a research assistant and later a researcher at the Center for Social Sciences at the University of Coimbra. Furthermore, she has meanwhile worked as a teacher for sociology and other subjects at several schools and as the editorial secretary of the Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais .
Political commitment
Matias is a member of the national leadership of the Bloco de Esquerda. She is a member of the management of Pro-Urbe , a citizens' initiative in Coimbra and national representative of the Cidadania e Responsabilidade pelo Sim movement , which was carried out as part of the national referendum on the impunity of abortion in Portugal . In 2005 she was the top candidate on her party's list in the elections for Coimbra City Council.
Entry and re-election in the European Parliament
Her party, the Bloco de Esquerda , nominated Matias in second place behind Miguel Portas for the 2009 European elections . The Bloco de Esquerda gained significantly in votes and had three MPs - Portas, Matias and Rui Tavares . The three MEPs joined the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left . During the legislative period (2009–2014), Matias was a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy for her parliamentary group , as well as a deputy member of the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (2012–2014). In the second half of the legislature, her group colleagues elected Matias to the group's executive committee.
Her party nominated her to first place for the subsequent European elections in 2014 after her fellow party member Miguel Portas passed away in 2012. The Bloco de Esquerda lost a lot of votes, so that Matias was the only member of her party to move in. In the legislature from 2014 to 2019 she rejoined the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left, to whose parliamentary group she was also directly elected. For the political group she was a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and a deputy member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy . Matias was also a member of the special committee on tax rulings and other measures of a similar nature or effect (TAXE 2).
For the European elections in 2019 , Matias ran again as the top candidate. The Bloco de Esquerda won two seats, Matias and her fellow party member José Gusmão moved in and rejoined the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left, Matias was elected deputy chairman of the group. In the 9th legislature, Matias is a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and the Subcommittee on Human Rights . She acts as an alternate member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs .
