The Mitropapokal 1928 was the 2nd edition of the international cup competition. The best teams from Austria, Hungary, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia took part. It was mostly the champions and cup winners of the respective countries. The participants played in a pure cup mode with two legs in the most important continental football competition in the period before the Second World War. In the event of a tie after two games, a playoff was played. All eight clubs started in the preliminary round or in the quarter-finals. The defending champion Sparta Prague was surprisingly unable to qualify for the cup at national level.
The finals took place within two weeks on October 28 and November 11, 1928 in Budapest and Vienna. The Hungarian champions Ferencváros Budapest qualified as well as last year's finalist SK Rapid Wien, who could only prevail in a play-off in both the quarter-finals and the semi-finals. At home, Ferencvárosi FC won 7-1 in the first leg and brought Providentia to Hungary for the first time after a 3-5 defeat at Hohe Warte . The top scorer was József Takács of the winning team from Budapest with ten goals.
