The Mitropapokal 1931 was the 5th edition of the international cup competition. The best teams from Austria , Hungary , Czechoslovakia and Italy took part. It was mostly the champions and cup winners of the respective countries. The participants played in a pure cup mode with two legs in the most important continental football competition in the period before the Second World War. In the event of a tie after two games, a playoff was played. All eight clubs started in the preliminary round or in the quarter-finals. The defending champion SK Rapid Wien was surprisingly unable to qualify for participation at national level.
The final took place within a week on November 8th and 12th, 1931 in Zurich and Vienna . As First Vienna FC and Vienna AC were two Austrian clubs that qualified for the final, the committee decided to have the first game played on neutral ground. Vienna won both in Zurich 3: 2 and in Vienna 2: 1 and was the only club in the history of the competition to receive the trophy unbeaten. The top scorer was Heinrich Hiltl from finalist WAC with seven goals.
