Ouaga 2000

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ouaga 2000 is a municipality in Ouagadougou , the capital of the West African state of Burkina Faso . It is located in the south of the capital, following the district of Patte d'Oie and was planned as a modern extension of Ouagadougou.

In Ouaga 2000 there are privately built villas, an embassy district, ministries, the new presidential palace (Palais Kosyam) , a national monument (Mémorial aux héros nationaux) , the Palais des Sports de Ouaga 2000 and a hotel complex financed by Libya. A congress center was also built.

The project is often the target of criticism; a decidedly luxurious quarter, the new construction of numerous administrative buildings and representative buildings are unsuitable and unnecessary in such a poor country. The financing, which mostly comes from Libyan funds, is also criticized ; Gaddafi's attempt at the time to expand his influence in Africa through gifts seemed too obvious . On the other hand, in view of the rapid growth of Ouagadougou's population, there are also increasing supporters of the project, because Ouaga 2000 can relieve the now completely overloaded city center of Ouagadougou in the medium term without massive structural interventions in the center.
