Kappel is a wasteland in the Upper Bavarian municipality of Unterammergau in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district and one of the three officially named parts of this municipality.

location

The district is located north of the Unterammergau district on the right side of the Ammer between Unterammergau and the Saulgruber district of Wurmansau . To the west of Kappel, the Ammer is the Unterammergau district of Scherenau on the left . In the east the forest stretches up to the Hörnle . In the north of the district the Kappellaine flows towards the Ammer.

history

According to legend, Count Eticho from Ammergau founded a small monastery here around 900 . However, this is not documented. In written sources, the chapel, which gave the district its name and which was later expanded to become a Kappelkirche , is only mentioned around 1450.

Townscape

Kappelkirche and sacristan's house

The townscape is characterized by the chapel church Heilig Blut and its Gothic steeple with pointed helmet. The former sacristan's house, a two-story pitched roof building with a gable roof, and the associated farm buildings are next to the Kappelkirche. The church and the sacristan's house are registered as architectural monuments in the Bavarian list of monuments.

The Xaveri Chapel, a chapel shrine with a figure of St. Francis Xavier, is located below the Kappelkirche at the foot of the step . On the footpath up to the church there are five stone wayside shrines from the second half of the 19th century, in which reliefs with the painful secrets of the rosary were housed. These shrines are also under monument protection . Next to the path is a Marian grotto in the style of Lourdes grotto with a figure of the Queen of Peace.
