Pilgrimage Church of St. Alban with a view of the Alps

The pilgrimage church of St. Alban stands free on a hill above Görwangs , a district of the municipality of Aitrang in the Swabian district of Ostallgäu in Bavaria .

history

Choir room
Panel ceiling around 1700

A small branch church of the Aitrang parish was located here as early as 1510. From 1697 to 1699 a larger new building was built, which was partly financed by the St. Mang monastery in Füssen ; because the parish church of Aitrang was incorporated into this monastery .

construction

After the roof ridge collapsed in 1896, the original onion hood was replaced by a pointed helmet, which today seems inappropriate. Almost abandoned to decay, the pilgrimage church was saved through an extensive restoration between 1998 and 2002.

Furnishing

The exterior appears simple, the bright interior impresses with its high-quality furnishings. The high altar made of stucco marble is considered an early work by Dominikus Zimmermann and dates between 1705 and 1707. The old altarpieces have been lost. Ferdinand Wagner from Schwabmünchen created a replacement in 1853 . A well-preserved panel ceiling from around 1700 shows scenes from the life of St. Alban and - in the middle main field - the glory of the church patron. The paintings are attributed to Georg Wassermann from Autenried near Günzach . The two side altars with their virtuoso carved acanthus tendrils are also worth seeing. The altar leaves were created by Paul Zeiller , father of Johann Jakob Zeiller . The main picture on the left is signed and dated (1704). The twisted columns of the two altars made of openwork carved acanthus without a core are remarkable.

Other items of equipment include:

  • The crucifix in the choir arch with four angels catching the blood of Christ with goblets (sculptor perhaps Hans Adam Bayrhoff from Füssen, around 1700),
  • a richly decorated pulpit (also around 1700),
  • the cheeks with carved acanthus and turned ball attachments,
  • Paintings on the walls with scenes from the life of the titular saint (around 1700)
  • and finally the late Stations of the Cross by Nikolaus Weiß (1792).

organ

Rocailles carvings are preserved on the three-part organ front, which were probably made around 1760 and thus at the same time as the frescoes (by Bartholomäus Stapf von Pfronten ) and the stucco ( attributed to Joseph Fischer ) on the gallery balustrade. The organ, which was “re-established” from 1977 to 1980 as a masterpiece by the Aitrang master organ builder Peter Karhausen , ties in with the tradition of local baroque organ builders (Ehinger, Freiwiß).
