The Gerresheimer AG (formerly Gerresheimer Glas AG) based in Dusseldorf is a listed German manufacturer of primary packaging made of special glass and plastics for the pharmaceutical, cosmetics and food industry. The company has locations in Europe, America and Asia.

history

Gerresheimer Glas AG was founded in 1864 by Ferdinand Heye , son of the businessman Caspar Hermann Heye (1792–1864), in Gerresheim near Düsseldorf . He ran the company on his own responsibility until 1888. In that year it was converted into a stock corporation . The company name was derived from “Ferd. Heye, Glass Factory, Gerresheim near Düsseldorf ”in“ Actien Gesellschaft der Gerresheimer Glashütte , vorm. Ferd. Heye, Gerresheim near Düsseldorf ”.

As Heye died in 1889, his son Hermann joined at the age of 23 years in the board of the company and took over in 1891 the management board . In 1907, Hermann Heye founded the European Bottle Factory Association. He bought the patent rights to the first bottle blowing machine for Europe developed by Michael Joseph Owens . It was used in the Gerresheimer Glashütte from 1908. Hermann managed the company until his death in 1941. From then on, his son-in-law Niels von Bülow took over the management of the glassworks, as he was now the oldest member of the board. During the Second World War , the Gerresheimer glassworks were classified as important to the war effort. As a result, a total of around 2,100 men and women from Eastern and Western Europe had to do forced labor in production.

In 1959, Owens-Illinois , based in Toledo ( Ohio ), took over 50.1% of the shares and in 1971 acquired the qualified majority in Gerresheimer Glas AG. A year later, in 1972, the company was renamed "Gerresheimer Glas AG." A branch in Heilbronn , which was taken over in 1967 by Salzwerk Heilbronn AG and integrated into the Gerresheimer Group in 1972, was closed on March 24, 1978 .

From November 1985 Gerresheimer Glas AG became an independent company again. The new majority shareholder was Westdeutsche Landesbank (WestLB) , which bought around 58% of the shares in Gerresheimer Glas AG from Owens-Illinois. From 1990 VIAG acquired a majority in WestLB's capital. In April 2000, as part of its merger with VEBA to found E.ON, VIAG sold its majority stake in Gerresheimer Glas AG to a consortium led by private equity investor Investcorp. Gerresheimer Glas took this off the stock exchange in 2003 and sold its stake at the end of 2004 to the US investor group Blackstone .

From the 1990s, Gerresheimer was gradually realigned strategically. Previously, Gerresheimer was one of the largest European manufacturers of beer and water bottles. This business area was given up and the company focused on special packaging for the pharmaceutical, healthcare and cosmetics industries.

In 1999 Gerresheimer Glas AG sold the Gerresheim glassworks together with five other production sites to the French company BSN glasspack, a subsidiary of the French Danone group. In December 2004 Owens-Illinois acquired BSN glasspack and with it the Düsseldorf glassworks again. In August 2005, the US company Owens-Illinois (OI) closed the Gerresheimer Glashütte, which was previously the world's largest bottle producer, after 141 years. In 2012 Patrizia Immobilien acquired the site of the former glassworks. The city of Düsseldorf and Patrizia Immobilien are banking on residential construction in the glassmaking district of Düsseldorf.

In June 2007 the (re-) listing on the stock exchange took place under the abbreviated name “Gerresheimer AG”. The company has been represented in the MDAX since December 2008 . The company's headquarters are still in Düsseldorf.
