Karel Klostermann

Karel Klostermann (born February 13, 1848 in Haag am Hausruck , Austria , as Carl Faustin Klostermann ; †  July 17, 1923 in Štěkeň ) was a German- and Czech-speaking writer. He also wrote under the pseudonym Faustin .

Life

Klostermann was born as the first of ten children of the doctor Josef Klostermann from Schlösselwald near Rehberg in the Bohemian Forest and his wife Carolina Hauer in Haag am Hausruck in Upper Austria. After graduating from high school in Písek in 1865 , he studied medicine at the University of Vienna from 1866 to 1868. For unknown reasons he did not graduate and in 1871 took up the position of tutor in northern Bohemia. A year later he worked as a journalist for Wanderer magazine in Vienna. From 1873 Klostermann taught French and German at the German state secondary school in Pilsen . Five years after his marriage, he became a civil servant teacher and stayed there until he retired at the age of 65. From 1907 Klostermann was a member of the city council of Pilsen. He was made an honorary citizen of the city of Pilsen and, along with Adalbert Stifter and Maximilian Schmidt, is one of the most important writers of the Bohemian Forest.

From 1885 his stories, written in German, appeared in the newspaper Politik . Since Klostermann's book Böhmerwaldskizzen, written in German, was unsuccessful, he increasingly turned to the Czech language as a writer ( Der Sohn des Freirichters , 1890). In 1892 his first novel From the world of forest loneliness was published , which was awarded a prize by the Royal Bohemian Society of Sciences . Between 1901 and 1919 ten of his fourteen novels and ten anthologies were published. Five of these novels received this society's annual award.

In July 1923 Karel Faustin Klostermann died in the monastery of the women's order Congregatio Jesu at Steken Castle in South Bohemia and was buried in Pilsen.

In 2008 the Czech Post issued a special postage stamp in honor of Karel Klostermann.

After 1998, the cross-border association Karel Klostermann - Dichter des Böhmerwaldes e. V. in Grafenau erected two memorial stones on both sides of the border with the inscription: Karel Klostermann - Apostle of Reconciliation between Germans and Czechs .

The landscape and the people of the Bohemian Forest are Klostermann's theme. As a realistic, naturalistic narrator, he portrays the harsh realities of the inhabitants of the Bohemian Forest in a drastic way and without pathos. But his fine humor can also be felt again and again in his works.

His decision to publish only in the Czech language has earned him a firm place among the classics of Bohemian storytellers. The accusation of some national-Bohemian reviewers and critics that the characters in his prose are Germans has not changed this. Even the expulsion of the Germans from Czechoslovakia after the Second World War, the memory of Karel Klostermann survived unscathed. On the contrary, he, who had hitherto been successfully hushed up by German nationalists, now received the honors that would have long been due him. Klostermann memorial plaques, Klostermann streets, Klostermann rooms in museums have only existed in the Bohemian Forest since Klostermann's compatriots no longer lived there.

The work of the writer, who campaigned for understanding between the Czech and German inhabitants of Bohemia and especially of the Bohemian Forest , has only recently been rediscovered on the German side. The Karl Stutz publishing house in Passau has reissued some of its works.
