Štěkeň [ ʃcɛkɛɲ ] (German Steken , formerly Stiekna , embroidery ) is a minority in the Czech Republic . It is located eleven kilometers east of Strakonice and belongs to the Okres Strakonice .

Geographical location
Štěkeň is located on the left side of the Otava at the foot of the Brdo (508 m) in the Bohemian Forest foreland . On the right bank of the river the railway runs between Budweis and Strakonice , the nearest railway station is two kilometers south in Čejetice .

The spot Štěkeň consists of the districts Nové Kestřany ( New Kesterschan ), Štěkeň ( Steken ) and Vitkov ( Witkow ).

history
Sczeken was first mentioned in 1318. Until then, the festival was the seat of Vladiken Bavor von Štěkeň, who sold it to Nikolaus von Janovice and Vimperk. Štěkeň belonged to the Říčanský von Říčany lords from 1412 to 1610 and then changed hands several times. After the Battle of White Mountain , the Štěkeň manor, consisting of the town of Štěkeň, four villages and a brewery, was confiscated in 1622 from the property of Jan Malovec of Malovice . 1648, the previously wandered in from Switzerland to Bohemia nobles acquired in January Anton Losy of Losinthal the rule Štěkeň with the associated villages Řepice , Maldějovice, Přešťovice , Čejetice , Droužetice , Přeborovice, Brusy, Cehnice , Dunovice, Netonice, Radějovice , Paračov, Kuřimeny , Sudkovice and Černěkov by Johann Anton, Prince of Eggenberg . Losy von Losinthal had the fortress converted into a castle between 1664 and 1665. After his death in 1682 his son Johann Baptist Štěkeň inherited. He died in 1683 and his brother Johann Anton Losy von Losinthal took over the inheritance . In 1720 he handed over his estate Štěkeň to his son Adam Philipp . After Adam Philipp Count Losy von Losinthal died on April 21, 1781 in Vienna without heirs, his widow Ernestine Countess Fuchs von Bimbach inherited the rule. In the same year she sold the property to Joseph-Niklas zu Windisch-Graetz . He was followed in 1802 by his son Alfred I. zu Windisch-Graetz .
After the replacement of patrimonial Štěkeň became an independent market town in 1848. In 1850 813 people lived in Štěkeň. In 1862 Alfred II. Zu Windisch-Grätz inherited the estate in Štěkeň, and in 1876 his son Alfred III followed. to Windisch-Grätz . He sold the castle on September 4, 1922 to the Institutum Beatae Mariae Virginis , which set up a boarding school in it. On September 1, 1868, the railway started operating and by 1879 the line between Budweis and Strakonice was completed. The railway station in Čejetice was renamed on April 30, 1891 in Štěkeň . In 1930 the place had 912 inhabitants. In 2007 the status of Městys was renewed.
