Alfred II to Windisch-Grätz

Alfred II. Josef Nikolaus Guntram Prince of Windisch-Grätz (born March 28, 1819 in Vienna , † April 28, 1876 in Tachau , Bohemia ) was an Imperial Austrian professional officer and large Bohemian landowner. He was the son of Prince Alfred I. zu Windisch-Grätz and his wife (Maria) Eleonore (1796–1848), daughter of Prince Joseph zu Schwarzenberg .

Life

Like three of his brothers, Alfred II zu Windisch-Grätz was a general in the Austrian army. When the Whitsun uprising was suppressed in Prague in 1848, his mother was killed and he himself wounded.

As his father's wing adjutant, he accompanied him on all military operations. In the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 he commanded two regiments in the decisive battle of Königgrätz , which ended with the defeat of Austria , and was seriously wounded by a shot in the stomach in the battle near Stresetitz .

He had been married to Hedwig Princess von Lobkowicz (1829-1852) since 1850 , who died a few years after the marriage. His only child was Alfred III. to Windisch-Grätz ; he lost his mother a year after he was born.

Alfred II died of late effects of his war injury at Tachau Castle, the Bohemian family seat of Windisch-Grätz. (His son and his wife also died here later.)
