Lipps, Inc. was a Minneapolis -based disco studio formation with Cynthia Johnson as lead singer.

biography

The band name was designed as a play on the term "lip-sync" (to sing lip-synchronic to playback). In addition to Cynthia Johnson, the band consisted of changing studio musicians. Steven Greenberg wrote and produced most of the group's songs.

Lipps, Inc. landed a number one hit in 1980 with the song Funkytown in Germany , Switzerland , Australia , the USA and 24 other countries. This was the band's greatest success. The follow-up singles Rock It (1980), How Long (1981), Hold Me Down (1982) or Addicted to the Night (1983) achieved even smaller successes, mainly in the American dance and R&B charts. Ultimately, Lipps, Inc. with Funkytown joins the category of one-hit wonders .

Funkytown was covered in 1987 by the Australian band Pseudo Echo . There is also a recording by the band Global Kryner . The song is still very popular today and is used again and again in TV shows (The Simpsons, Friends etc.), movies (Shrek 2 etc.), video games, advertising campaigns (Areva Energy, FedEx, Nissan, McDonald's etc.).
