Leo Mildenberg

Leo Mildenberg (born February 14, 1913 in Kassel ; † January 14, 2001 in Zurich ) was a German numismatist , coin dealer and collector of antiquities.

life and work

He attended school in Bad Mergentheim and Schwäbisch Hall and then studied Ancient History and Semitic Studies in Frankfurt, Leipzig and, after fleeing as a Jew from Germany, at the University of Dorpat , where he received his doctorate in 1938 . Here he also taught as a lecturer in Oriental and Semitic languages ​​until he was deported to Kazakhstan in 1941, now as a German . In 1947 he emigrated to Switzerland. Here he founded the Numismatic Department of Bank Leu in Zurich , of which he later became director and which he headed until his retirement in 1990. He developed the company into one of the leading dealers in ancient coins. From 1954 to 1969, together with his friend and professional colleague Hermann Rosenberg, he ran the Lucerne coin auctions, which were recognized worldwide.

In addition, he was scientifically active in the field of numismatics, especially ancient Jewish coinage. He was active as a sponsor and organizer of numismatics, which earned him numerous honors, for example from 1966-79 he was the editor of the Swiss Numismatic Review, in 1980 he was made an honorary member of the International Association of Professional Numismatists , and in 1985 he received the Archer M. Huntington Medal of the American Numismatic Society , in 1995 he was made an honorary doctorate from the University of Tübingen , in 1999 he was made an honorary member of the Royal Numismatic Society in London.

Since 1950, he wore a collection of animal representations from the ancient times together, which became the largest in the world. 1981–1999 several exhibitions of his collection took place in numerous locations in the USA, Europe and Israel. At his request, most of the collection was auctioned off at Christie's in London in 2004/05 after his death .
