David Gordon Middle

David Gordon Mitten (born October 26, 1935 in Youngstown, Ohio ) is an American classical archaeologist .

Life

David Gordon Mitten studied at Oberlin College ( AB 1957) and at Harvard University ( MA 1958), where he was particularly influenced by George MA Hanfmann . From 1959 to 1961 he worked at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens . After returning to Harvard University, he worked there as a lecturer , received his doctorate in 1962 and was appointed Assistant Professor of Classical Art in 1964 . In 1968 he was appointed Associate Professor of Archeology and in 1969 James Loeb Professor of Classical Art and Archeology . At the same time he worked at the Fogg Art Museum from 1965 , as a curator from 1974. In January 2010, Mitten retired .

Since 1959, Mitten was involved in the excavations in Sardis , which are led by Harvard University. During his numerous stays in Greece and Turkey, he became familiar with the religions there. In 1969 he converted to Islam .

Mitten wrote numerous articles and essays about the excavations in Sardis. In addition, he dealt with ancient art in numerous aspects, especially with antique bronze statues.
