Hermann Rosenberg (numismatist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermann Rosenberg (born June 26, 1896 ; † January 4, 1970 ) was a Swiss numismatist , coin dealer and managing director of Adolph Hess AG in Lucerne .

Life

Hermann Rosenberg comes from an old Frankfurt coin dealer family. His father Sally Rosenberg owned one of the most important pre-war Frankfurt auction houses. Hermann Rosenberg's future career would have been mapped out had he not had to break off his studies in archeology and art history in Frankfurt to take part in the First World War as a soldier. After his return he worked in his father's coin shop. He switched from his father's company to the Adolph Hess AG founded by Hermann Feith, where he carefully observed the political changes in Germany. In 1931 Adolph Hess AG went with part of the company warehouse to Switzerland and Hermann Rosenberg became managing director of Adolph Hess AG in Lucerne. He ran this company until his death. Adolph Hess AG became famous for its high quality auctions . From a numismatic point of view, Hermann Rosenberg was an all-rounder who was able to describe coins from all five continents and from all epochs briefly but accurately according to the standards of the time. After Leo Mildenberg's return from captivity, Adolph Hess AG teamed up with the numismatic department of Bank Leu and carried out a number of important auctions. This collaboration was given up soon after Rosenberg's death.

Auctions

Under the aegis of Hermann Rosenberg, around 80 auctions were carried out, for which he created scientific auction catalogs that were distinguished by their short but relevant description. A large part of the most important collections of the pre- and post-war period was liquidated at Adolph Hess AG under the direction of Hermann Rosenberg. These collections include the Archduke Sigismund Collection of Austria (Adolph Hess AG, auctions on March 28, July 11, November 14, 1933 and June 12, 1934), the Walters-Webb collection (Adolph Hess AG, auction on May 9 1932), Sydenham Collection (Adolph Hess AG, auction on April 28, 1936), Hoskier Collection (Adolph Hess AG, auction on February 15, 1934), Trau Collection (Adolph Hess AG, auction on April 28, 1936), Graf Collection Enzenberg (Adolph Hess AG, auction on March 19, 1935) and the Grand Duke Michailowitsch collection , the date of which was scheduled for October 25, 1939, but could no longer be held due to the outbreak of war.
