The State Vocational School Center (BSZ) in Waldkirchen in the Freyung-Grafenau district in Bavaria is made up of five vocational schools, which, with almost 1,500 students, is one of the largest schools in the region. The school center is of supraregional importance because it is the only vocational school in Bavaria that combines all three training occupations in the field of “building envelopes” and all prospective Bavarian roofers are taught at the school center in Waldkirchen. In addition to the main location in Waldkirchen, the school also has a branch in Grafenau .

history

The origins of the school go back to 1948, in which the then Wolfstein district made the decision to establish a district vocational school based in Waldkirchen. In the following year, school operations started under very provisional conditions (including in an abandoned horse stable in Freyung ). The district vocational school initially consisted of carpenters , metalworkers and tailors . The school moved several times between 1950 and 1964. At the beginning of the 1964 school year, lessons could begin in the newly built vocational school in Schlag in Grafenauer Land. In 1970 the vocational school for agriculture, housekeeping and child care was founded. Due to the district reform in 1972, the school in Schlag was attached to the Freyung-Grafenau district vocational school. 1974 marked an important milestone in the development of the school. With the award of the training center for the Bavarian roofing trade, all apprentices from Bavaria have been taught in Waldkirchen since then, which makes the school center known across regional borders. Two years later, a roofer dormitory was built to accommodate the trainees. At the end of the 1970s a high of over 2,700 students could be reached. In 2002 the vocational school center was expanded and upgraded with the establishment of a technical college and later a vocational college . In 2010 the vocational school for hotel and tourism management was founded at the branch in Grafenau.
