Mitterfirmiansreut , popular place name Mitterdorf is a district of the municipality of Philippsreut in the Freyung-Grafenau district .

location

Mitterfirmiansreut is at an altitude of 1037 meters, making it the highest village in the Bavarian Forest and one of the highest in Germany. It is located about three kilometers northwest of Philippsreut and about three kilometers east of Mauth on State Road 2130.

history

Mitterfirmiansreut was founded by the Passau prince-bishop Leopold Ernst Graf von Firmian . The focus was on securing the borders of the Passau Monastery against Bohemia . Against the resistance of the glass lord Franz Hilz von Neuhütte, who wanted the forest to be reserved as ash forests or a glassworks location, the court chamber in Passau published a document on September 7, 1764, which describes the systematic allocation process for a total of 18 new settlers. The prince-bishop added with his own hand that the plan found “our perfect approval in all parts”. Those willing to settle in these “Firmiansreither villages” ( Vorderfirmiansreut : 6 settlers, Mitterfirmiansreut: 7 settlers, Hinterfirmiansreut : 5 settlers) all came from the immediate vicinity ( Bischofsreut , Herzogsreut , Philippsreut). The settlement pioneers of the Waldhufendörfer received 14% of the area in Mitterfirmiansreut, 16% in Hinterfirmiansreut and 18% in Vorderfirmiansreut.

After secularization in Bavaria and the formation of the community, Mitterfirmiansreut came to the community of Annathal . An emergency school was set up at the request of the Mauther Parish Curate Joseph Meßner on June 22, 1809. Long-term efforts for a proper school followed, but there was also resistance because of the feared additional burdens. On December 16, 1852, the new Mitterfirmiansreut school was opened.

The teaching conditions were extremely difficult, so there was a constant change of teachers. From September 1893 to October 1894 a new, larger and more comfortable school house was built, while the previous school building was auctioned.

In church terms, Mitterfirmiansreut belonged to the parish of Mauth. On August 11, 1907, it was decided to found a church building association in the Mitterfirmiansreut schoolhouse. A Snow Church was built in March 1911 , and hundreds of photos of the Snow Church with appeals for donations made their way around the world. But the First World War and the subsequent inflation delayed the construction of the church. The current church was built from 1923 to 1925, and on November 20, 1930 the Mitterfirmiansreut branch was founded . In the same year the cemetery was opened. In 1932 the church could be enlarged.

When the Annathal community was dissolved with effect from January 1, 1946, Mitterfirmiansreut joined the Philippsreut community. In 1964 the first diesel-powered ski lift was built east of the village. With the installation of a lift near the church in 1965, the opening up of the Almberg for winter sports began. In 1967 the 1200 meter long “Große Almberglift” was built, and in 1971 the “Almwiesenlift”. In 1970 the first large tourist company was opened, followed by others.

By ordinance of June 16, 1969, the government of Lower Bavaria dissolved the Mitterfirmiansreut elementary school on August 1 of that year. Mitterfirmiansreut was still the school location of the Philippsreut partial school for a year, on July 22, 1970 was the last day of school in Mitterfirmiansreut. The school house was sold in 1971 and transformed into the Hotel Sportalm.

The Almbergsee was created in 2010 to feed the snowmaking system of the local winter sports center. On December 28, 2011, Dean Kajetan Steinbeißer consecrated a new snow church.
