Bischofsreut is a district of the community Haidmühle in the Lower Bavarian district of Freyung-Grafenau . Until 1978 it formed an independent municipality.

location

The Waldhufendorf is around 1,000 meters above sea level on the border with the Czech Republic , halfway between Haidmühle and Philippsreut .

history

The village on the lower Golden Steig in the Passau bishopric was founded in 1705 by 14 settlers under Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp von Lamberg . As early as 1708, the village of Böhmisch Röhren was founded on the Bohemian side. The establishment of localities in these extremely remote and inhospitable areas underlined above all the sovereign claims of the sovereigns. In 1713 the prince-bishop granted his settlers an area of around 12 days' work . The place name Neuhäuser became common among the people .

From an ecclesiastical perspective, Bischofsreut originally belonged to the parish of Freyung , joined the vicariate of Grainet in 1748 , became a branch in 1869 and a parish in 1880 . The neo-Romanesque parish church of St. Valentin was built from 1870 to 1872 by the architect Leonhard Schmidtner . The furnishings come from Wolf Hirtreiter , the oldest item is a cross from 1650 from the church in the former village of Leopoldsreut , the so-called Leopoldsreuter Herrgott . In 1989 the parish had 547 Catholics.

From the 19th century, Bischofsreut belonged to the municipality of Leopoldsreut. Poaching and smuggling with occasional personal tragedies were not uncommon in the border area. The fate of the miller's assistant Georg Lang from Schnellenzipf near Bischofsreut, who was shot in Bohemia on August 18, 1862, was even celebrated in a folk song, the text and melody of which have been handed down. In Schwarzenthal there was a glassworks from 1821 to 1859, which was followed by a sawmill. The Freiwillige Feuerwehr Bischofsreut was founded in 1880, the SV Bischofsreut in 1962.

With the resolution of the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior of April 27, 1951, the community name was changed from "Leopoldsreut" to "Bischofsreut". On May 1, 1978, the municipality of Bischofsreut came to the municipality of Haidmühle as part of the regional reform in Bavaria .

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the municipality of Bischofsreut showed a bishop's staff, sword and watchtower. The description of the coat of arms reads: Tower silver / white, crossed above with a crook and sword in gold on a red background.

The watchtower, also known as the “Granitzhaus” (border house), stood on Weberberg above Bischofsreut in the middle of the jungle (1360–1600). The sword and crosier are reminiscent of the great clearing activity of the Passau prince-bishops.

tourism

Tourism in Bischofsreut recorded an enormous boom in the 1960s. In 1960 the community of Bischofsreut counted 7,406 overnight stays, in 1970 with 327 beds, 43,836 overnight stays were achieved. In 1975 a branch of the Sparkasse was opened. The Farmer and Forest Museum has been housed in the community center since 1976. In addition to agricultural and forestry equipment, handicraft utensils from the Bohemian Forest and the Bavarian Forest are on display.

At the end of the 1980s, the Bischofsreuter Waldhufen was discovered as an important habitat for flora and fauna. 85 bird species and 50 butterfly species have been identified here. The KulturLandschaftsMuseum Grenzerlebnis is a museum project in Bischofsreut and Haidmühle. The preserved cultural landscape shows here a section from an extensively used low mountain range cultural landscape in the Bavarian-Bohemian border area. The museum elements have been preserved in their original places and are connected to one another by museum walkways. The modular structure of the Goldene Steig, the Flursteig and the Triftsteig (Kreuzbachklause) have so far been completed; other projects are the “Biodiversity Trail” from Bischofsreut to Haidmühle and the “Industriesteig” in Haidmühle. The former school house in Bischofsreut is to be set up as a museum house and headquarters. The KuLamu-Förderverein offers guided tours and other activities.
