Hinterfirmiansreut , the popular place name Schmelz , is a part of the municipality of Philippsreut in the Freyung-Grafenau district .

Hinterfirmiansreut is located about one kilometer northwest of Mitterfirmiansreut at an altitude of about 950 meters on the northern slope of the Steinkopf mountain on State Road 2130. It is about 500 meters to the state border.
history
The Waldhufendorf Hinterfirmiansreut, like Mitter- and Vorderfirmiansreut, was founded by the Passau prince-bishop Leopold Ernst Graf von Firmian in 1764. Hinterfirmiansreut originally had five properties, and the settlers received 16 percent of the town hall.
After secularization in Bavaria and the formation of the community, Hinterfirmiansreut came to the community of Annathal . On October 13, 1848, the K. State Ministry of Finance approved a forest protection district with a station assistant in Hinterfirmiansreut. From 1856 to 1857, under the direction of the Royal Building Inspectorate Passau, a forester's house for 4730 guilders was built at the north-western end of Hinterfirmiansreut at state expense. The Hinterfirmiansreut forestry department was subordinate to the Wolfstein Forestry Office, Finsterau Revier and from 1973 to the Mauth Forestry Office . A transfer to this extremely arduous forest department could have the character of a punitive transfer in the 19th century, especially since skis were still unknown at the time. As a rule, the forestry people affected tried to move back to a less remote and less snowy area as quickly as possible. In 1992 the office was relocated to Mauth under the name "Forest Service Mauth I".
As in all border towns, smuggling was also important in Hinterfirmiansreut. On August 11, 1915, the Hinterfirmiansreut border team was able to take eight draft oxen from several smugglers worth 6,000 to 7,000 marks, which were to be exported to Bohemia . On the night of August 18 to August 19, 1915, the teams at the Hinterfirmiansreut border station intercepted six strong oxen worth around 4,500 marks.
From an ecclesiastical perspective, Hinterfirmiansreut belonged to the parish of Mauth until the Mitterfirmiansreut branch was founded on November 20, 1930. When the Annathal community was dissolved with effect from January 1, 1946, Hinterfirmiansreut became part of the Philippsreut community. Hinterfirmiansreut is much less influenced by tourism than Mitterfirmiansreut. It had its population peak in 1925 with 131 inhabitants, after which the population development mostly declined.
There are two inns in Hinterfirmiansreut. The landlord's right from house no. 5 (Knaus Helmut inn, Lindenstrasse 6) dates back to the 18th century. The origins of the Hotel-Restaurant Bärenhof go back to 1993.
