The 1139 m high Almberg is located around 20 kilometers northeast of Freyung near the border between Germany and the Czech Republic. Its slopes are mainly used as a ski area. On its east side is Mitterfirmiansreut , a winter sports-oriented place with five ski lifts , a chairlift and an extensive network of trails . The Almberger Telescope Meeting takes place there every year .
In 2010 an artificial lake with a storage volume of approx. 28,000 cubic meters was built at the approach to the Alpe district, which is used to feed the snow-making systems in the ski center.
The summit plateau offers a panoramic view of the Bavarian Forest National Park with Rachel and Lusen . On clear autumn days with the influence of the foehn , the Northern Limestone Alps from the Dead Mountains to the Zugspitze can also be seen.
The surrounding villages (Philippsreut, Hinterfirmiansreut , Mitterfirmiansreut and Vorderfirmiansreut ) were founded in the 17th century by the Passau prince-bishops Lamberg and Firmian. No people lived in this region before. The next settlement was Mauth (about eight kilometers from Mitterfirmiansreut).
