A bapao is a “roll-like” dumpling with a filling - more precisely filled yeast dumpling or baozi - in the Netherlands , whose origins lie in the multiethnic colonial cuisine of the former Dutch East Indies - now Indonesia . The bapao belongs to the typical street food culture in the country of origin Indonesia .

etymology

The name Bapao - also called Bakpao - is derived from the Hokkien term Bahpau - Chinese  肉包 , Pinyin ròubāo , Jyutping juk 6 baau 1 , Pe̍h-ōe-jī bah-pau  - "meat and yeast dumpling" - and is of Chinese origin. Historically, overseas Chinese emigrated from the Fujian region in south-east China brought this Chinese food to the colonial territory of the Netherlands at the time as a cultural export (see also Baozi ). The dish spread with the Chinese minority in what was then the Dutch East Indies and is now an integral part of Indonesia's cuisine . It probably came to Europe during the Dutch colonial period through emigrated Eurasian Indo-Dutch people of Chinese descent or Moluccas to the Netherlands.

ingredients

Minced , shredded chicken or vegetarian ingredients are often used for the filling . In principle, anything can be used that can be chopped up and brought into the right consistency. The bapao is usually in the shape of a large round bun , but in contrast to the same, it is white on the outside because it is steamed . The consistency is reminiscent of yeast dumplings or steamed noodles . The dough is made from wheat flour , water and yeast . After preparing it, you let it rise for a while before it is processed further.

The Bapao is available as a snack in takeaways and market stalls . Many supermarkets in the Netherlands sell it as frozen food for preparation in the microwave . It is often consumed with chili sauce .
