from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

hromadske.tv ( Ukrainian Громадське телебачення / Hromadske telebatschennja , German  public television ) is a Ukrainian Internet television broadcaster that started operations on November 22, 2013. It rose to the most popular news sources in the country in the course of the " Euromaidan ".

history

In June 2013, a group of prominent Ukrainian journalists announced their initiative to found Hromadske TV as an internet broadcaster independent of both the government and other individual interests, which would follow the principle of transparent funding and focus on investigative journalism. Many of the founding members, including Mustafa Najem , had previously worked for the television channel TVi, which has long been regarded as one of the last media critical of the government, and left the channel under protest at the end of April 2013 after a controversial change of ownership. hromadske.tv started on November 22, 2013, roughly at the same time as Espreso TV . A branch of the station in Russia was also founded shortly afterwards, but had to cease operations after only three months due to financing problems. After Viktor Yanukovych's government rejected the planned association agreement with the European Union , the Euromaidan protests broke out, which ultimately led to the overthrow of the Yanukovych government in February 2014. hromadske.tv showed solidarity with the demonstrators and was able to gain massive popularity as a result.

The English-language branch “Hromadske International” was launched in September 2014. Its central program is the weekly political information program The Sunday Show , in which international experts are asked about Ukrainian politics. In addition to videos, the Hromadske authors also produce multimedia background articles and information graphics under the “Hromadske International” brand, which they distribute via the most important social networks.

Controversy

hromadske.tv describes itself as neutral and objective, but the broadcaster has been accused of political bias from various sides.

In July 2014, a station host broke off an interview with a Russian employee of Human Rights Watch after she pointed out the civilian victims of the war in eastern Ukraine and refused to call Russia the sole cause of the fighting.

financing

hromadske.tv is funded by donations, both from inside and outside Ukraine. According to the station's own financial report, at the end of 2013 around 60% of its financial resources came from the embassies of the United States and the Netherlands in Kiev and the International Renaissance Foundation of George Soros . The German embassy contributed € 89,298.00 in 2015 and € 79,428.00 in 2016.
