Too beautiful for you (original title: Trop belle pour toi) is a French feature film in the form of a romantic comedy by Bertrand Blier from 1989, which was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes International Film Festival.

action

The southern French BMW dealer Bernard lives with his attractive wife Florence in a representative, classically furnished house. His son brings him closer to the music of Franz Schubert , which accompanies the entire film.

From the first moment, Bernard falls in love with the rather staid and average-looking Colette, who starts out as a temporary secretary in his car dealership. In short episodes, the film tells his life with the two women who plunge him into a deep dichotomy. On the one hand his wife, who avowedly wants to fight for him - on the other hand his lover, who is married to the writer Pascal and, despite the passionate affair, has doubts about the seriousness of her lover's feelings.

Different time levels, music by Schubert and Francis Lai (Where Do I Begin? (Love Story) ) provide a framework for the flow of the plot. Some episodes are fictional, others reflect the thoughts and fantasies of the people involved. In the end, Bernard stands there empty-handed because both women leave the undecided.

Reviews

“The rather everyday story becomes a fascinating cinematic experience thanks to the extraordinary type of staging, which relies on the simultaneity of yesterday, today and tomorrow and also reproduces impossible situations as realities, and the elegant camera work. The use of music is also impressive. In spite of the sometimes drastic dialogues, a funny and intelligent confrontation with love, men, women and the cinema. "

"'Too beautiful for you' is a treatise on love, with multiple refractions and variations and so splendid with profundity and noble furniture that not even Gerard Depardieu's usual berserk charm can prevail."

“The author turns out to be an obsessed handyman and chops up his story into tiny pieces. Every shot lasts for seconds, scenes are started and canceled, picked up and forgotten. Blier shot a pale video clip with a carpet of music that is supposed to promise Schubert, misfortune and depth, images that only shine for themselves, and sentences that resemble listless advertising slogans.
