Doris Soffel (born May 12, 1948 in Hechingen ) is a German opera singer ( mezzo-soprano ).

Life

Soffel first studied violin , then singing (teacher: Marianne Schech ) at the University of Music and Theater in Munich . From 1973 to 1982 she was a member of the Stuttgart Opera Ensemble, where she took on roles such as Carmen, Dorabella (Mozart: Così fan tutte ) and Octavian (Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier ). Her international breakthrough came in 1982 at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, London, as Sesto in Mozart's La clemenza di Tito and as Prince Orlofsky in Strauss ' operetta Die Fledermaus .

Soffel sang Fricka at the Bayreuth Festival as early as 1983 . She then became the only German female coloratura mezzo-soprano with an international career with engagements in bel canto operas such as L'italiana in Algeri and La Cenerentola by Rossini , Maria Stuarda by Donizetti and Norma von Bellini . She sang world premieres by contemporary composers such as Aribert Reimann and Krzysztof Penderecki . She could be heard in concerts with Mahler's works around the world. Her artistic work is documented in over 60 CD and DVD recordings.

From 1994 she played more dramatic roles like Judith in Béla Bartók's Duke Bluebeard's Castle , Princess Eboli in Verdi's Don Carlos and Amneris in Aida . In 1996 she sang her first Klytämnestra ( Elektra) at the Salzburg Festival .

Soffel as Ortrud (2003)

Since 1999 Soffel has been one of the internationally sought-after Wagner and Strauss singers with roles such as Ortrud ( Lohengrin ), Kundry ( Parsifal ), Fricka ( Das Rheingold and Die Walküre ), Herodias ( Salome ), Amme ( The Woman Without a Shadow ) and Klytämnestra ( Elektra ). In 2007 she took on the female lead with Marfa in the Mussorgsky opera Chowanschtschina at the Bavarian State Opera , Munich, and in 2008 Kabanicha in Janáček's Katja Kabanowa at the Cologne Opera and Jezibaba in Dvořák's Rusalka at the La Monnaie Theater, Brussels.

Between 2004 and 2017 she sang Herodias in eleven different Salome productions and between 2010 and 2017 she sang Clytemnestra in six Elektra productions. Since 2015 roles such as Erda in Wagner's Ring , Mme de Croissy in Poulencs Dialogues des Carmélites , Leokadja Begbick in the rise and fall of the city of Mahagonny and Geneviève in Pelléas et Mélisande have also been part of her repertoire.

Soffel lives in Berlin and is married to a Swede; they have a grown daughter together.

Awards

In 2006 Soffel became a chamber singer at the Cologne Opera. She is the bearer of the Royal Swedish North Star Order .
