Pierre Elie Barouh (born February 19, 1934 in Paris ; † December 28, 2016 there ) was a French composer , singer and author .

Life

Barouh grew up with his siblings in Levallois-Perret , where his parents, who ran a fabric trade, lived until the outbreak of World War II . Then they took their children to the Montournais region , Département Vendée, for safety . These experiences can later be found in many of his lyrics ( À bicyclette , Des ronds dans l'eau , Les filles du Dimanche ). After the war Barouh worked as a sports journalist and as an active athlete he was a member of the French national volleyball team .

During longer stays in Portugal, Barouh discovered Brazilian music, especially the bossa nova , for himself and contacted composers of this style. He also tried his hand at the beginning of the 1960s as an actor and documentary filmmaker on Bossa Nova, portraying Baden Powell de Aquino . In 1966 he was involved as an actor and composer in Claude Lelouch's film A Man and a Woman , which was awarded a Palme d'Or in Cannes . With Nicole Croisille he also sang the title song Un homme et une femme , for which he wrote the text. Barouh then bought a mill in Vendée and set up a recording studio there. He called his record label Saravah , with whom he discovered and promoted numerous musical talents in the following years, including Jacques Higelin and Brigitte Fontaine . From 1966 to 1969 he was married to Anouk Aimée .

Since his marriage to the Japanese painter Atsuko Ushioda , he has spent half of the year in his wife's home country since the 1980s. Their daughter is the musician Maïa Barouh . He also published music recordings on a regular basis - he wrote the music for the 1992 Winter Olympics -, was involved in films and wrote plays. As a singer, he was also involved in recordings by David McNeil (around 1975), Daniel Mille (1999) and Jean-Pierre Mas (2012).
