Jacques Joseph Victor Higelin (born October 18, 1940 in Brou-sur-Chantereine , Département Seine-et-Marne , † April 6, 2018 in Paris ) was a French singer, composer, film and theater actor and author. His songs are influenced by chanson , hot jazz , blues , rock 'n' roll , reggae , funk , new wave as well as Arabic music and sometimes have experimental and theatrical aspects. He sang in French and occasionally in English and has worked with Areski Belkacem , Brigitte Fontaine , the Art Ensemble of Chicago and Youssou N'Dour , among others .

Life

His first musical influences were his father's piano playing, popular chansonniers such as Maurice Chevalier and Charles Trenet, and jazz of the post-war period. Even in his youth, Higelin performed with singing in the cinema (as entertainment during breaks), in debut competitions on the radio and in musicals. Henri Crolla taught him the guitar , and Higelin also learned piano and clarinet . In the early 1960s he took lessons at the private drama school Cours Simon .

During his military service he was stationed in the FRG and Algeria in 1961 and met the musician Areski Belkacem. Back in Paris, Higelin was soon working again for film and theater, starting with café-théâtre appearances. At the end of 1964 he appeared with the actors Rufus and Brigitte Fontaine on the show Mélancaustique . He wrote and played the play Maman j'ai peur ou Est-ce que les veaux font des manières? (1967). With Brigitte Fontaine he released two albums with chansons by Boris Vian (1965, 1968). In 1969 he recorded a first album of his own songs with Areski Belkacem. During this time, Higelin also played the play Niok with Areski and Fontaine at the Petit Théâtre du Lucernaire.

In 1971 he released his first solo album Jacques “Crabouif” Higelin - a mixture of experimental chanson, blues and Arabic influences. With BBH 75 he turned more to rock and funk music. The albums Champagne pour tout le monde and Caviar pour les autres (1979), which were influenced by swing , jazz and boogie , he recorded in part in New Orleans .

To celebrate François Mitterrand's election success (1981), Higelin gave a concert with the band Téléphone on the Place de la République in Paris. His show Jacques Joseph Victor there (1982), which consisted of concert and theater elements, he played a. a. For eight weeks at the Cirque d'Hiver and at the Fête de la Musique in Paris. With the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra he recorded Prokofiev's musical fairy tale Peter and the Wolf (Pierre et le loup - Le carnaval des animaux) in 1984 . His album Tombé du ciel (1988) sold over 300,000 copies and won the Grand Prix du Disque de la Chanson Française of the Académie Charles-Cros . In 2005 he released an album with 18 chansons by Charles Trenet . In November 2007 Higelin received the Italian songwriting award Premio Tenco .

Jacques Higelin is the father of actor Kên Higelin, singer and actress Izïa Higelin and singer Arthur H.

Under the title Lettres d'amour d'un soldat de 20 ans , a compilation of love letters was published in 1987, which he wrote to a woman in Paris during his military service in Germany and Algeria.
