Areski Belkacem (born January 23, 1940 in Versailles ) is a French musician , composer , record producer and actor . His musical spectrum includes Arab and African influences , chanson , jazz , rock and experimental pop music .

Life

Areski Belkacem (often just called Areski ) was born in Versailles to parents of Algeria . In 1969 he recorded the album Higelin et Areski with Jacques Higelin , whom he had met during military service . In the same year he played the revue Niok with Higelin and Brigitte Fontaine at the Petit Théâtre du Lucernaire. Pieces of the Revue Comme à la radio resulted in a collaboration between Fontaine, Areski and the Art Ensemble of Chicago, the album of the same name, which received the Grand Prix du Disque de la Chanson Française. In the following years Areski brought out several albums together with Fontaine, on which the duo experimented with different musical styles as well as lyrical-theatrical texts. Even after the end of his creative phase as a duo (1970 to 1985) he wrote and produced numerous works by Fontaine.

In 1970 Areski released his first solo album Un beau matin . In 1972 he played the leading role in Pierre Barouh's debut film Ça va, ça vient . In the 1970s he also worked as an actor and composer with the theater director Peter Brook at his Center International de Recherche Théâtrale. In 1982 Areski directed the play L'inconciliabule ou Acte II by and with Brigitte Fontaine - in which he also played a part, and in 1985 he brought out the theater spectacle Made in France with her at the Théâtre de Paris . He wrote the score for À mort la mort! (1999, D: Romain Goupil), and - together with Fontaine and his son Ali Belkacem - the film music for Jeunesse dorée (2001, D: Zaïda Ghorab-Volta). In 2002 he composed the music for a production of the play Liaison transatlantique (2002, D: Patrice Kerbrat). Areski Belkacem released
his second solo album Le Triomphe de l'Amour in October 2010.
