Jappeloup is a French feature film directed by Christian Duguay from 2013 . Based on actual events, he describes Pierre Durand's rise from a simple show jumper to the winner of the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 with his horse Jappeloup de Luze , which was originally considered to be too small to successfully compete in show jumping tournaments.

action

Pierre Durand has been passionate about horses since he was a child. He rides cross races and has to deal with defeat. He receives support mainly from his father Serge Durand, while the mother is always concerned about the well-being of her child. While Pierre was gaining his first experience as a show jumper, Jappeloup was born in a stable near Saint-Seurin-sur-l'Isle . Owner Henry Dario and his granddaughter Raphaëlle, who grew up with their grandfather after the death of their parents, raise Jappeloup and, above all, Raphaëlle has a deep understanding of the difficult horse. While Pierre competes in smaller tournaments and finally begins to study law, Raphaëlle begins to ride Jappeloup. The horse proves to be too impetuous for her skills, especially since it shies away from any obstacle. Because it still has very good facilities, Henry Dalio offers it to Serge and Pierre for sale. Pierre, who is increasingly suffering from the double burden of studying equestrian sports, refuses to buy: the three-year-old Jappeloup not only refuses to walk over obstacles, but at 1.58 meters is clearly too small for show jumping compared to other horses of his age . Raphaëlle is relieved to be able to keep Jappeloup.

At the CSIO in Olsztyn , Poland , Pierre Durand believes he has a chance of winning in 1978. However, he falls during the competition and breaks his hand when his horse escapes and kicks him. At the hospital, his mother makes it clear to Pierre that she will never come to one of his competitions again. Serge, on the other hand, urges his son to choose a career as a show jumper or as a lawyer. Pierre chooses a secure career as a lawyer. Two years later he works as a partner in a law firm and rarely sits on a horse because he doesn't have the time. During a competition visit with his father, he sees Jappeloup again, who is being ridden by young Nadia. When the horse shrinks from an obstacle, Nadia breaks off her competition. Serge, however, recognized the potential of the animal and bought Jappeloup for Pierre in 1980. He in turn gets closer to Nadia, with whom he shares his love for horses. Soon Pierre also begins to work with Jappeloup. He hires Raphaëlle to take care of the gelding because Jappeloup's character is difficult. In the course of working with horses, Pierre increasingly loses interest in his work as a lawyer and eventually leaves the firm. He starts to ride smaller tournaments on Jappeloup, wins several times, but also has to take setbacks. Things are going better privately: Pierre marries Nadia.

After a test jumping, Pierre Durand becomes part of the French national team, but already experienced a major setback at the 1982 Nations Cup in Longchamp: Because he started too early, he was disqualified during the competition. He freaks out and doesn't stop at Nadia and Serge. Nadia makes it clear to him that she will not accept this behavior in this or in any other situation. In the same year, Pierre wins the French championships in Fontainebleau . Shortly afterwards, his personal happiness is perfect: He learns that Nadia is pregnant.

Professionally, Pierre comes into conflict with national team coach Marcel Rozier more and more often. At the Olympic Summer Games in Los Angeles in 1984 there was a scandal at a press conference at which Pierre was asked to name, among other things, the selling price for Jappeloup, which, however, was not for sale. The horse shies away from an obstacle during the competition and throws Pierre Durand. He does not manage to deal with the public embarrassment appropriately. He decides to sell Jappeloup to the American John Lester, who wants to pay him $ 400,000 for the horse. Nadia is outraged that Pierre is not a fighter. Serge asks him to think twice about the decision, while Raphaëlle quits her job at Pierre and leaves the farm. Pierre signs the contract with John Lester and goes to the sea with Nadia. There he received news that his father Serge had a surprising heart attack and died in the riding arena. John Lester in turn informs him that he is thinking of canceling the purchase contract for Jappeloup, as the blood test revealed that the horse has piroplasmosis . After the birth of his daughter, Pierre finally canceled the contract on his own initiative. Raphaëlle, on the other hand, only returns to him on the farm because he promises to change his relationship with Jappeloup: He has to learn to see the horse as a living being and not as a machine that can be used to make money.

Pierre can only slowly develop a trusting relationship with Jappeloup. When Jappeloup was slightly injured in a jump during training for the 1985 European Championship , Pierre Durand withdrew his participation in the competition. When he came into conflict with coach Marcel Rozier, he dropped out of the national team. The family's financial situation worsened in the period that followed, especially as Pierre failed to convince sponsors of himself and Jappeloup. A phone call brings the good news: Rozier has been replaced by Patrick Caron, who wants Pierre back in the national team. Pierre took part in the 1986 World Championships , where he rode risky and was in the lead before the final with horse change. In the final, however, he falls behind due to numerous cracked obstacles. Gail Greenough, on the other hand, overcomes the course with Jappeloup without mistakes and wins the world championship. Pierre begins to doubt his ability as a rider, but the close bond between rider and horse becomes apparent shortly afterwards: When the horse truck of the French national team catches fire, Pierre is able to calm down the panicked Jappeloup and catch him. At the Summer Olympics in Seoul in 1988, Pierre Durand finally won bronze with the team on Jappeloup before he was able to secure the gold medal in show jumping in an individual competition with a flawless second run. It is the first time that his mother has been watching one of his races indirectly on TV at home after many years. Pierre's late father is also present at the race: Pierre wears his photo on the inside of his riding cap.

production

Jappeloup - A Legend is loosely based on the book Crin Noir by Pierre Durand's sister-in-law Karine Devilder , which refers to Durand's life. Guillaume Canet wrote the script for the film and took on the lead role. He rode in the film himself - as a child and teenager Canet was a show jumper, but gave up the sport after a serious fall. In his youth he met Marina Hands, who was a successful show jumper in the early 1990s. Director Christian Duguay was also active as a show jumper in his youth and became a Canadian junior champion before turning to film. Several supporting roles were filled with (formerly) successful show jumpers, such as Virginie Coupérie-Eiffel (French champion 2005) and Frédéric Cottier (team bronze medalist at the 1988 Olympic Games).

The shooting of the film took place from September 8th to December 12th 2011 on Cap Ferret , Bergerac , Fontainebleau , Seville and Mallorca . The costumes come from Caroline de Vivaise , the film structures were created by Emile Ghigo . The budget was around 26 million euros. The film was released in French cinemas on March 13, 2013, where it was seen by 1,782,479 viewers. It was released on DVD on July 17, 2013. The German theatrical release was on February 6, 2014.

criticism

Le Parisien praised Jappeloup - Eine Legend as a film that "celebrates persistence and passion without denying unevenness." Télérama called the film classically old-fashioned, elegant and carefully made, with the main character being drawn quite ambivalently. The competition scenes at the Olympic Games would keep even the audience in front of the screen in suspense.

L'Express found that the film had the typical sequence of sports films tracing a success story. Christian Duguay's director was particularly criticized for the fact that the film was simply photographed instead of staged and did not create any tension. With Jappeloup - Eine Legende, Duguay broughta spectacular, sporty crescendo to the screen, "which is rare in our cinema," wrote Le Point .

Awards

Christian Duguay was nominated for the Grand Prix des Amériques for Jappeloup - Eine Legende 2013 at the Montreal World Film Festival . Lou de Laâge received a César nomination in 2014 in the category of best young actress .
