Crolla is originally from Italy, but his family moved to France in 1922. They then lived in the Paris quarter at the Porte de Choisy , where Django Reinhardt's family also lived. He made the acquaintance of Jacques Prévert at an early age and was already playing in Parisian cafés and jazz clubs such as La Boîte à Sardines , where Coleman Hawkins was also performing. The Second World War interrupted his career; he was mobilized in Italy, but deserted and returned to France. During the war years, he got by with odd jobs and rare opportunities to perform. It was not until 1946 that he was naturalized as a French citizen.

In 1954/55 he played at Club Saint Germain with Grappelli and Soudieux. In 1955 Crolla made his first recordings under his own name for the French label Vèga , on which Martial Solal , Georges Arvanitas and Soudieux, among others , participated. Henri Crolla was also active as a composer for film music; together with André Hodeir, he was involved in film scores for films with Jean Gabin , Jeanne Moreau and Brigitte Bardot .

Between 1955 and 1958 he took up other music in various fields, such as jazz, film music and popular light music, and went on tour with Montand to the Soviet Union ; In 1956 he had his first film appearance as a comedian in the film burlesque by Grimault and Pierre Prévert . In 1958 the Django Reinhardt homage Notre Ami Django appeared with Grappelli and Hubert Rostaing as guest soloists and a program that is associated with the guitarist who died in 1953. Other contributors are Roger Guérin , René Urtreger , Géo Daly , Pierre Lemarchand , Al Levitt , Emmanuel Soudieux and Christian Garros . In 1958 Paul Paviot also made a film about this homage à Django en 58, in which Hubert Rostaing, Joseph Reinhardt , Stéphane Grappelli and Crolla appear. Through the Prévert family, Crolla got closer to film; At the end of 1958 he had a major role in a film by Henri Fabiani ( Le bonheur est pour demain ).
