World Without Sun is a French-Italian documentary from 1964 . The film is one of the most important contributions to underwater film today .

action

The French marine researcher Jacques-Yves Cousteau reports on the experiment Continental Shelf Station Two (short: Conshelf Two). In the Red Sea off Sudan , nine researchers, including Cousteau, live at a depth of ten meters in a special construct on the sea floor. The men are supposed to live and work there for 30 days. In addition to the structure reminiscent of a starfish, the men have a special hangar at their disposal. A small 2-man submarine and a small deep-sea bell, also designed for two men, are available for work at a depth of 30 meters.

The film documents the dimensions of the experiment, starting with the supply of the men with oxygen, water, food and energy by a large team on the surface on board the ship Calypso . The men on the sea floor carry out various experiments, play underwater chess and dive with the small submarine to a depth of 300 meters.

reception

The lexicon of international films praised the pictures, which convey knowledge about the “second space” in captivating colors and teach you to be amazed at the beauty of creation.

Bosley Crowther of the New York Times was particularly enthusiastic about the great achievements of underwater photography in the beautiful color film. However, he also questions the authenticity of the recordings, especially the recordings of the submarine's diving trips.

The Protestant film observer is also full of praise : "A work of captivating beauty and to be recommended to everyone."

Today Welt ohne Sonne, together with Cousteau's Die schweigende Welt (1956) and the works of Hans Hass ( People under Sharks , 1947; Adventure in the Red Sea , 1951) are counted among the most important contributions to the underwater film.
