Michael Sarrazin

Michael Sarrazin (actually Jacques Michel André Sarrazin ; born May 22, 1940 in Québec , † April 17, 2011 in Montreal ) was a Canadian actor .

Life

Sarrazin was born in the Canadian city of Québec. He studied acting at the Actors Studio in New York City . In 1957, at the age of 17, he made his first appearance in a Canadian television production. Universal signed him in 1965 , and he moved to Hollywood in 1967 . In his professional career, he worked in major roles in award-winning films, especially in the 1970s.

Sarrazin was nominated for a Golden Laurel in the 1968 Laurel Awards in the Male New Face category. In 1969, he was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Young Actor in the film drama The Wild Years . In this film he worked with Jacqueline Bisset , who was also nominated for a Globe Award.

The final breakthrough came with Sarrazin in the male lead in the film drama Only Horses Are Given the Gunshot (1969) by Sydney Pollack . In what is probably his most famous role, Sarrazin played Jane Fonda's partner in a dance marathon. The film was nominated for an Oscar in eight categories in 1970 . Gig Young won the Best Supporting Actor award . Sarrazin was the following year, at the presentation of the British Academy Film Awards as Best Newcomer nomination. Michael Ande dubbed Sarrazin on this film.

In the two-time Oscar-nominated drama They Want To Be Giants (1971), Sarrazin starred alongside Paul Newman , who also directed, and with Henry Fonda and Lee Remick . This was followed by a role in the also Oscar-nominated western comedy That Was Roy Bean (1972) by John Huston , this time with Newman as the leading actor. In Peter Yates' film comedy With Me You're Right (1974) , Sarrazin was seen at Barbra Streisand's side as a film husband driving her taxi. He played the title role in The Re-Incarnation of Peter Proud (1975) by J. Lee Thompson . The other cast included Jennifer O'Neill and Margot Kidder . Sarrazin also played the title role in the comedy film The Loves and Times of Scaramouche or Scaramouche (1976) by Enzo G. Castellari with Ursula Andress .

In the 1990s, Sarrazin appeared more frequently as a guest star in television series. In 1999 he was nominated for a Gemini Award for his supporting role in the dramatic television series The City . Sarrazin died in 2011 of complications from cancer.
