FearDotCom is a 2002 mystery thriller directed by William Malone .

action

An old man with bleeding eyes dies in an underground train station in New York City. In his hands he holds a copy of a book in which the author Frank Bryant asserts that negative energies can take on a life of their own in computer networks . Due to the bleeding eyes, the police initially assume a virus infection . That's why Detective Mike Reilly gets help from Terry Huston from the Department of Health . They quickly find out that the man did not die of a viral disease. As soon as the autopsy is finished, there are more victims who also die with bleeding eyes. By comparing the hard disk drives of the victims to know Mike and Terry, that the victims have one thing in common: all died within 48 hours after the site had called feardotcom.com. Terry suspects his nemesis, Alistair Pratt, to be behind this , a mad doctor who was previously noticed by snuff websites , but could never be tracked down.

With no other clues, Mike looks at the website. Shortly afterwards he was delusional and admitted to hospital. Terry now also decides to visit the website and comes up with the solution. The website is not hosted by Alistair at all, but by Jeannine, one of his victims, who haunts the Internet as a ghost. Terry recovers her body after her mother has given clues, but the ghost still doesn't rest. Together with Mike, who fled from the hospital, they have the corpse autopsied and thus find (on a swallowed piece of paper) a clue to the doctor's whereabouts. Once there, Mike is seriously injured. He can still access feardotcom.com and the ghost kills Alistair. Mike then dies in Terry's arms.

background

Director William Malone was drawn to the idea that the internet was getting out of hand. As a contrast, he contrasted modern technology in the form of the Internet and computers with a gloomy, rainy New York City in the style of the 1930s .

Reviews

FearDotCom was generally rated extremely poorly: Rotten Tomatoes counted only three positive out of a total of 95 reviews, on average the critics gave the film 2.7 out of 10 possible points. The site sums up the consensus as follows: "FearDotCom is as frustrating as a 404 error - the movie is a stylish but incoherent and nasty mess with just a few eerie moments." Often criticized was the not very exciting story copied from The Ring , as well as the fact that the actors Jeffrey Combs , Stephen Rea and Udo Kier hardly get a chance. Mick LaSalle wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle of August 30, 2002 that the film was "badder than bad". Except for the representations, it is a catastrophe; The camera work, the lighting and, above all, the direction are particularly bad. LaSalle scoffed that the audience was dying of boredom.

The website “Cineclub” assesses the film as follows: “We've had it all before, haven't we? Right - somehow the whole thing reminds of The Ring (...) FearDotCom is an imposition for every viewer! Filmed without any green tones - allegedly especially in Luxembourg, since it was easier to film dilapidated factories there in bad weather. William Malone tried a variety of classic film tricks to create fear - but if you mix and steal like that, it can only be repulsive. Just because of the hope of a great resolution, one or the other may stay in the cinema. But it's not worth waiting for. "
