Nigel Terry
Nigel Terry (born August 15, 1945 in Bristol , Gloucestershire , † April 30, 2015 in Newquay , Cornwall ) was a British actor .
Life
As the son of a Royal Air Force pilot, the actor was born under the name Peter Nigel Terry in Bristol shortly after the end of the war . Soon after, his family moved to Truro , Cornwall , where Terry attended Truro School . During his school days he discovered his interest in acting. After briefly working in forestry, among other things, Terry joined the National Youth Theater on the advice of his parents . In 1963 he trained as a professional actor at London's Central School of Speech and Drama .
Terry began his career on the theater stages in Oxford and his native Bristol, and was one of England's most recognized contemporary theater actors. He has often appeared in productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company and has appeared in well-known theaters such as the Bristol Old Vic and the Royal Court Theater in London. Terry made his movie debut in 1968 with Peter O'Toole and Katharine Hepburn in The Lion in Winter . He played his best-known film role in 1981 under the direction of John Boorman as King Arthur in Excalibur . This was only his second film role after The Lion in Winter .
Nigel Terry began a fruitful collaboration with British director Derek Jarman in the 1980s , which only ended with the director's untimely death. In 1986, he embodied the title character in Jarman's biography Caravaggio . Further appearances in various films and television productions followed. Terry had guest appearances in well-known series such as Highlander and Doctor Who . In 2004 he played the Trojan high priest in a supporting role in Wolfgang Petersen's historical epic Troy .
Terry lived in London for about thirty years before moving back to his old home in Cornwall in 1993. The actor died there in August 2015 at the age of 69 as a result of a lung disease .
