Blue is the twelfth and final film by the British film director and painter Derek Jarman before he died of AIDS . By the time the film was released in 1993, the disease had almost blinded him. The film shows the color blue for the entire duration of the game and is accompanied by the music of Simon Fisher-Turner and the voices of Jarman himself and a few selected actors . The theme is Jarman's life and his visions in an elegiac retrospective. The soundtrack of the film was broadcast on the British channels Channel 4 and BBC Radio 3 on the occasion of its premiere .

The film begins with a bell ringing , after which a voice explains the effect and symbolism of the color blue . The narrative finds the link to the director's psychological problems, the most intense of which is the loss of sight. The spoken text becomes an episodic collection of childhood memories , diary entries , eulogies for the loss of friends, social commentary, poetic thoughts, discourses on politics on the subject of homosexuality , reports on the benefits of illness, aesthetic excursions and escapist fantasies.

Effect and symbolism
Jarman confronts the viewer with a monochrome image projection of the color blue, which , according to his own statements, had taken over his field of vision in the course of his illness. In this way he metaphorizes his blindness, which at the same time no longer allowed him to make a conventional film. Metaphorically, the blue in the film corresponds to strong fears of loss, the accusatory musical rhythms and the infinity of sky and oceans . It contrasts with the “ white canvas ” in the sense of emptiness as a counterpart to Jarman's fulfilled life. In the impression of the blue color, noises, music and language condense into a drama in the mind of the beholder.
Auditory dramaturgy
The narration, accompanied by music and sound effects , is spoken by the actors Nigel Terry , Tilda Swinton and John Quentin and Jarman himself. Through the personal exposure of the director, the viewer is directly affected and allows him to participate in a “stream of consciousness ”. The tenor varies between spirituality and agitation .
