Shadow of the Vampire is a horror film released in 2000 . The film pays homage to Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's work Nosferatu - A Symphony of Horror .

action

The German film director Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau is planning to shoot his horror film Nosferatu in Eastern Europe in Berlin in the 1920s . The film should be as authentic as possible. That is why Murnau has hired an actor for the character of the vampire, who is allegedly a student of Stanislawski and who practices method acting , so puts himself completely in the role of Count Orlok and only appears in costumes and make-up. In truth, Max Schreck , the alleged actor, is a real vampire, which the film crew doesn't know. Schreck should get the blood of the main actress Greta Schröder as a fee for his services . But during the shooting, Schreck cannot control his greed for blood and falls on the cameraman Wolfgang Müller. Due to the cameraman's strange illness , the shoot had to be interrupted as Murnau had to return to Berlin to find a replacement. During this break from filming, producer Grau and screenwriter Galeen talk to Max Schreck. They question him and he tells how he became a vampire. Grau and Galeen are shocked, but still assume that Schreck's eccentricity is due to his method acting . The director returns with Fritz Arno Wagner , the new cameraman. As the shooting continues, Schreck attacks the members of the film crew one after the other and nobody notices. However, Galeen notices who is really hiding behind the mask of Count Orlok . But fright sucks his blood out and Galeen falls into the same trance as everyone else. Meanwhile, Murnau also realizes what he has done to his alleged actor and that he cannot be brought under control. He confesses to the film crew who Max Schreck really is. But since everyone is stuck at the location, there is no way to escape. The only thing left for them to do is to finish the film and to make Greta the victim of horror. During one scene, Greta is actually sucked out of shock in front of the camera, and Grau and Wagner are killed by him. Finally the rest of the film crew manages to expose horror to daylight and thereby destroy it. Meanwhile, Murnau continues to film undeterred and uses these real scenes for the film.

Reviews

“An atmospherically cleverly stylized homage to Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau and his legendary film from 1921/22, at the same time a reflection on filmmaking and the will to art, whereby the film makes a remarkable effort to bring the ethical dimension of art into the To be the focus. "

“After his first work ' Begotten ', theater director Elias Merhige again dives into bizarre realms. Here he tells a fictional story with a real background. With impressive images, the director revives the times and reconstructs, so to speak, the possible states of the shooting of the horror classic 'Nosferatu'. But humorous moments are not left out either. Willem Dafoe gives a wonderful performance as bloodsucker Max Schreck and was nominated for an Oscar for his performance. This is a real feast for film freaks! "
