Begotten is an experimental or horror film that was written and produced in 1990 by E. Elias Merhige . Begotten was planned by Merhige from the start as the first part of a trilogy . The second part, the 14-minute short Din of Celestial Birds , came out in 2006.

The film deals with the topics of religion and the origin of the earth . However, Merhige revealed during a question-and-answer session that the inspiration came from a near-death experience he had at the age of 19. The entire film is recorded in black and white. The individual frames were photographed afterwards to give the film its unmistakable appearance. This technique makes some parts of the plot difficult to understand for the viewer, and it is made more difficult by the fact that there is no speaking in the entire film.

Probably the most striking feature of the film is the repeated, blatant depiction of violence in many forms ( self-mutilation / murder , rape or burning)

action

At the beginning of the film we see a secluded house where one in robes dressed God lives, gutting itself and then dies. A woman, "Mother Earth" , rises from the dead body, who rises the dead God and impregnates herself with his seed. Mother Earth then wanders through the world pregnant, until she finally gives birth to a child the size of a full-grown man.

The next scene then seems to be out of context. You can see a group of faceless beings, dressed in robes, reminiscent of nomads. They torture another person in order to cut them up in the end.

Then you can see Mother Earth and her son (also known as "Son of Earth" or "Flesh on Bone") lying on a meadow. After a short time, your child will begin to twitch uncontrollably - similar to an epileptic seizure. Mother Earth now ties her child by putting a noose around his neck and pulling away with him. The two end up in a kind of surreal desert, in which flowers grow and pipes run along the ground with no recognizable pattern. Here they meet the robes who killed the person in the previous scene. They are also killed and buried by these "nomads". After the "funeral", all the plants wither and the sun goes down. The next morning, Mother Earth can suddenly be seen again with her leashed son. Both go back to the forest that can be seen at the beginning of the film.
