Hear My Song (German alternative title: Hear My Song - A dream comes true ) is a 1990–1991 comedy film by the British director and screenwriter Peter Chelsom . It is based on the authentic life story of the Irish tenor Josef "Joe" Locke (1917–1999).

action

Liverpool , early 1980s: Variety manager Micky O'Neill wants to convince his financiers to keep the heavily indebted Music Hall Theater “Heartly's” afloat by promising them a very special artist: Joe Locke , the legendary Irish tenor, who has gone into hiding since a tax affair 25 years ago and has not stepped on stage since then and nobody really knows where he is and whether he is still alive, should celebrate his comeback at "Heartly's" . Joe Locke can be hired surprisingly quickly, the house is sold out, the audience enthusiastic: “Heartly's” and O'Neill's career as a theater manager and organizer seem to be assured. But not only music-loving theatergoers, but also the British tax investigators are interested in the star. The alleged "Joe Locke" is identified as a con man and impostor during the debut evening of Kathleen Doyle, a beauty queen from the 1950s with whom Joe had an affair at the time.

The investors jump off, the "Heartly's" is closed, O'Neill stands, also abandoned by his lover Nancy, in front of the ruins of his existence. But he wants to know again and takes the ferry to Ireland to look for the real Joe Locke. With the help of Fintan O'Donnell, a friend who also works as an event manager, he actually manages to locate Joe Locke at a cattle auction in the Irish provinces , gain his trust and persuade him to make a comeback in Great Britain. Locke is well aware that returning to Liverpool means facing his past as a tax evader and former lover of Kathleen Doyle. In "Heartly's", which has since fallen into ruin, he gives a brilliant concert evening, at the end of which he is supposed to be arrested by the tax police. In the end, Locke can disappear into the crowd acclaiming him, whereupon the "wrong" Joe Locke is arrested.

criticism

“Hear My Song” is a late product of the New British Cinema , is one of those films that immerse the viewer in a rollercoaster of emotions: you laugh, you cry, are touched, get goose bumps, and at the end you leave the cinema with them a good feeling ( epd Film , 8/1992), quoted from: Cimematographisches Calendarium , July 1993.
