Clifton Webb , born in Webb Parmalee Hollenbeck , (born November 11, 1889 in Indianapolis , Indiana , † October 13, 1966 in Beverly Hills , California ) was an American actor .

Life

Webb left school at the age of 13 to study art and painting. At school he had already trained as an actor and dancer. At 19 he worked as a dancer in New York and from his mid-20s he played in musicals and plays on Broadway . The success on Broadway took him to London. In the 1920s and 1930s, he was considered one of the most talented stage stars in the country.

His film career only picked up speed in the 1940s , although he had already gained experience in silent films. His most famous film role was that of Waldo Lydecker in Otto Preminger's film noir Laura . For this he received the first of a total of three Oscar nominations. He received the other nominations for the literary film adaptation Auf Messers Schneide (1946) - his appearance in this film also earned him a Golden Globe Award - and for his role as Housekeeper Belvedere in the comedy Belvedere cleans up (1948). Other roles such as that of the father of 12 children in the comedy Cheaper by the Dozen made Webb, who often appears squeamishly comedic in films, an unlikely Hollywood star. The theater remained his real profession until the end of his life.

Webb's homosexuality was an open secret in Hollywood. He lived with his mother until her death in 1960, which led Noël Coward , in whose plays he was regularly seen, to comment: "It must be hard to be an orphan at the age of 70."
