Cheaper by the Dozen (Cheaper by the Dozen) is an American movie from the year 1950. Directed by Walter Lang . Lamar Trotti adapted the book of the same name by Frank Bunker Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey for the script . The main roles were played by Clifton Webb , Myrna Loy and Jeanne Crain .

action

The film begins with a picture of Providence in 1921. This is where Ann Gilbreth said from the off, that she was living at the time. But the film is about her family, especially her father Frank Gilbreth, an expert on efficiency , and her mother Lillian.

Frank returns home from a trip and calls his eleven children together, measuring how long it takes them to do it. After greeting them individually, he announces that the family will be moving to Montclair . The move takes place with the entire family in the family car. When registering in the new school, all children have to go with them, including those who will not attend this school at all and who find it embarrassing. The reason: the family must be shown. Frank demonstrates - of course fully clothed and sitting on or in front of a chair - the teachers present how to wash efficiently.

Frank and most of his children have to have their tonsils removed. This must be done in the family home (not in the hospital) so that the operations can be filmed. Frank then uses the film to explain to the doctors how they can work more effectively. With the children this is done under anesthesia, but with Frank this does not work - how else could he supervise the filming? When he is led to his bedroom, exhausted after his operation, the cameraman confesses that he forgot to insert a film.

The twelfth child is born. The planned number has thus been reached. Lillian makes it clear that it is enough now. A family photo is taken when the boy is introduced to the family.

A Mrs. Amelia Mebane visits Lillian and asks if she would like to chair the local group for a birth control organization. Lillian brings her husband for the interview. He calls the children together (this time they are faster than last time), whereupon Mrs. Mebane, shocked, takes flight.

While on vacation on Nantucket , Ann begins to rebel against what she thinks her father is old-fashioned about his daughters' clothes and hairstyles. She continues this at home as well. When she is invited to a school ball, Frank gets him to come. First of all, many of the students there shook their heads. Later, however, he surprises Ann by dancing with several of her classmates and finally with her.

Frank says goodbye to his family. He wants to give lectures on increasing efficiency at conferences in Prague and London. However, he already has a fatal heart attack at the train station. The family council meets and they decide that Lillian should take over Frank's job while the children help her with the house. The family should stay together and not move in with grandmother. From the off, Ann tells that Lillian gave the lectures for Frank and later became the leading figure in the field.

Literature template and family history

In the book Cheaper by the Dozen , the authors humorously tell episodes from their childhood and youth up to the death of their father in 1924.

In real family history, the second oldest daughter, Mary, died at the age of six. In the film it is portrayed as secondary and it has no text either. Robert is shown as the youngest child in the family. In reality he was the second youngest, the youngest being Jane.

actor

Clifton Webb , who had received an Oscar nomination for the role of Lynn Belvedere in the film Belvedere cleans up (Sitting Pretty) in 1949 , seemed to be the ideal cast for the role of Frank Gilbreth Sr. Bosley Crowther pointed to the similarity of the two roles in his film review.

For Myrna Loy , at 45, the lead roles were over. She was warned that the role of mother of twelve could end her career. But she admired the real Lillian Gilbreth and therefore accepted the role. This role was her last major leading role.

synchronization

Cheaper by the dozen was dubbed by the Elite Film Franz Schröder GmbH. Konrad Wagner wrote the dialogue book and also directed the dubbing.

The film received a rating of 7.1 out of 10 at IMDb. Rotten Tomatoes did not give a critical rating (due to a lack of reviews), the audience rating was 3.3 out of 5 with an agreement of 66%.

Cheaper by the dozen was described as pleasant to look at , as a funny and nostalgic family story or as charming entertainment for the whole family . It has warmth, charm and real laughter and is a fun and sometimes bizarre family film , a look back to the time when father was still the king of his castle . At release, the film was also named one of the freshest ... family films , but at DVD release in 2004 it was considered no longer fresh . The film has an expiration date precisely because of the dictatorial father.

The film is accused of being episodic rather than action-driven , so it is not a coherent story. Little things just happen in a house with many children . The direction is felt to be a bit stiff and the whole thing is mental chewing gum .

Clifton Webb is mostly praised. He plays the father perfectly down to the last detail. The film was carried by a wonderful leading actor or even artistically designed around the triumphant Mr. Webb . However, it is also noted that Clifton Webb was average as the father of the house .

aftermath

On July 5, 1951, the Lux Radio Theater broadcast a radio play version. Clifton Webb performed as Frank Gilbreth Sr.

In 1952 the sequel to the film, based on a sequel to the book, was made available for marriage in the dozen .

The comedies Cheaper by the Dozen from 2003 and Cheaper by the Dozen 2 - Two fathers go crazy with Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt are only loosely based on the books or the original films.
