Elizabeth Ann Theresa "Betty" Lynn (born August 29, 1926 in Kansas City , Missouri ) is an American actress . Notoriety she gained as Thelma Lou on the Andy Griffith Show alongside Don Knotts and her role as Deborah Lancaster in Cheaper by the Dozen .

Life

Betty Lynn was born in Kansas City in 1926. Lynn's mother was a mezzo-soprano and gave her daughter singing lessons when she was five. At the same time, after several violent acts by the father, the parents separated. At the age of seventeen, Lynn joined the United Service Organizations as a troop entertainer and performed, among other things, at the China Burma India Theater, various hospitals and troops in Rangoon .

Betty Lynn began her acting career as a radio play speaker on a radio station in Kansas City. In 1940 she made her debut on Broadway in Walk with Music . In 1943 Lynn was in the musical Oklahoma! seen again on Broadway. She was discovered during a screening by the film producer Darryl F. Zanuck and signed to 20th Century Fox . Lynn made her film debut in a supporting role in the comedy Belvedere cleans up in 1948 .

In the following years, Betty Lynn was seen in several film productions and as a guest star in various television series. Her best-known film role is that of Deborah Lancaster in the 1950 film Cheaper by the Dozen . In 1960, Lynn got the role of Thelma Lou , friend of Don Knotts-played Barney Fife on the Andy Griffith Show . She played this role until the series ended in 1966. After further appearances in television series, including four episodes of Dear Uncle Bill and Matlock and seven episodes of My Three Sons , Lynn ended her acting career in 2006.

Betty Lynn was never married. She now lives in Mount Airy , North Carolina, and hosts monthly fan meetings at the Andy Griffith Museum there. For her services, Lynn was honored in 2007 with the inclusion in the Missouri Walk of Fame in Marshfield . In August 2016 she received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest civilian honor in the state of North Carolina.
