life and career

Evelyn Varden began her acting career as a teenager in the 1900s. In the course of her long and successful theater career, she appeared in around 30 Broadway productions between 1910 and 1955 , including her greatest success as Mrs. Gibbs in the world premiere of Our Little City . Varden also took on the role of Juliet's wet nurse in a 1951 performance of Romeo and Juliet alongside Olivia de Havilland . Although she was once allowed to play the leading role in Lawrence Riley's play Return Engagement , the rather small and corpulent character actress usually appeared in supporting roles. Another huge hit was her last Broadway appearance in the world premiere of Maxwell Anderson's Evil Seed , which is about a mother who discovers that her young daughter is a murderous psychopath. Varden also took on the role of neighbor Mrs. Breedlove in the film adaptation of the same name by Mervyn LeRoy .

Varden made her film debut in 1949 at the age of 56, when she played a relatively small role in Elia Kazan's racial drama Pinky . In the 1950s, in addition to her theater career, she also developed into a busy Hollywood actress in a total of 14 films, who mainly played somewhat comical and lovable supporting characters such as neighbors or matrons. One of her negative roles was the stupid merchant Icey Spoon in the thriller Night of the Hunter (1955) alongside Robert Mitchum and Shelley Winters . She has also had guest roles on many television series such as The Alcoa Hour and Alfred Hitchcock Presents . After working to the end, she died in 1958 at the age of 65.
